New Build Georgian House, Hampshire

New Build Georgian House & Barn, Hampshire

Fowlers were commissioned to secure planning for a replacement dwelling on the site of an old farmhouse in rural Hampshire.

The original house dated from around 1860 and was of little architectural merit, but the elevated site it occupied was sublime.   Also on the site was a large derelict barn and the decision was taken early on to keep the barn and incorporate into the overall plan for the house.

Large sash windows were a key part of the design as was the double height curved bay on the garden elevation.  This gentle, semicircular bay gives a pleasing asymmetry and striking individuality to the home, as well as giving the principal rooms extended views across the garden.

Retrospectively the clients decided to link the house with the barn, so plans were drawn up to create a single storey walkway to connect the two properties both physically and visually.  The walkway combines timber features from the barn with the brick and flint of the house and mirrored the sash windows along both sides.

For the final link we opted for a thoroughly modern glass section, so from certain angles the barn seems joined to the house whilst from others they appear as two separate – but complimentary buildings.

Completed in 2022, the house is now widely acknowledged as one of the prettiest houses in the area.
